DARWIN MEMORIAL LECTURE

Social Darwin: Hope, Feare and Modernity Dr Carolyn Burdett

The decades following Darwin's death were characterised by arguments about the nature of humans and their political and social organisation in a modern world. In this talk, Dr Carolyn Burdett investigates the role Darwin's ideas played in these diverse debates, where social Darwinists emphasized the brutal struggle for survival while their opponents pointed to the evolutionary roots of cooperation and alturism.
